| Yak Q&A |

Following are some of the questions we receive about the yaks:

1.  Cost:  Pricing varies depending on temperament, pedigree and type of coat, with super woolly animals commanding the highest prices. Typically pricing can start at $800 running as high as $4500

2.  Are Yaks tame?  Bottle babies and animals that have close human contact can be very tame

3.  Can you get fiber?  Fiber can be combed, usually in spring & early summer.  Calves and super woolly animals tend to produce the most

4.  Do you have to trim the hooves?  Normally once a year is adequate depending on the soil type and terraine where the animal lives

5.  Are the animals easy to fence?  Yaks are easy to contain once they know the pasture they are in is home.  They can crawl under or jump over 4 wire fencing if they really want out

6.  How much do they eat?  Calves consume approximately 3lbs per day and adults about 10 lbs of quality hay per day

7.  Do Yaks need supplements?  They require white salt and a multi mineral with copper year round, and additional protein is needed when strictly feeding hay

8.  Do you worm yaks?  Ivomec pour on in spring and fall is best

9.  Are Yaks good mothers?  Adult cows normally make good mothers, however; first time mothers need to be watched for the first week or so after the calf is born

10.  When should you wean yak babies?  Generally between 4 & 5 months

11.  Do Yak mothers have easy births.  Generally yes, but they can have some of the same problems that other bovines do

12.  Vaccines?  Yearly with at least 7 or 8 way (some use 11 way).  Calves need a booster 1 month after the first injection.

13.  Treats – there are several different treats than can be offered:  Horse cookies, Nutrena Senior grain, or cattle cakes.  Your yak will often choose there favorite.
